When the truth becomes visible, authority doesn’t collapse—it escalates.

The signal deepens.

Not louder.

Broader.

The screens around the school stutter—then realign.

New overlays appear.

Not school logos.
Not district seals.

Just a simple designation in the corner of every feed:

EXTERNAL OVERSIGHT ACTIVE

Williamson exhales slowly.

Not relief.

Recognition.

Kimiko staggers.

“That’s not administration,” she whispers. “That’s… above the pipes.”

Maya’s jaw tightens.

“They’re not fixing the school,” she says. “They’re auditing it.”

Olivia squares her shoulders.

“Means we weren’t supposed to last this long.”

Eli watches Williamson carefully.

The man isn’t angry.

He’s smaller now.

Less central.

“You escalated,” Eli says quietly.

Williamson nods once.

“I contained,” he corrects. “They oversee.”

A new voice cuts through the intercom.

Calm.
Unemotional.
Unfamiliar.

“Principal Williamson,” it says.
“Step aside.”

Williamson hesitates.

Just a fraction.

Then does.

The cameras don’t follow him.

They lock on the kids.

The voice continues.

“Students involved in the Zero Period incident,
you are no longer a school-level concern.”

Maya scoffs.

“Great.”

Kimiko’s hands shake.

“What does that mean?”

Eli answers before the voice can.

“It means the ladder’s real.”

The gym feed fills every screen.

Graduation has resumed.

Caps thrown.
Parents cheering.

Normalcy restored.

The cost paid.

The voice speaks again.

“The system performed within acceptable loss parameters,” it says.

Eli stiffens.

“Loss?” he repeats.

A brief pause.

Then—

“One student did not reintegrate.”

Maya closes her eyes.

Aiden.

The system doesn’t say his name.

It doesn’t need to.

Olivia’s voice is low and dangerous.

“You erased him.”

The voice replies evenly.

“Correction was successful.”

Kimiko feels something snap inside her.

“That’s not success,” she says. “That’s disappearance.”

Another pause.

Longer.

“You demonstrate persistent resistance,” the voice observes.
“That is… notable.”

Eli steps forward.

Unsteady.
Unhidden.

“What happens now?” he asks.

The answer comes immediately.

“You advance.”
