When they agree to undo the system’s edit, they learn it never takes what you offer—only what you can survive losing.

The prompt blinks.

CONFIRM ROLLBACK? — Y / N

No countdown.
No pressure tone.

The system doesn’t rush irreversible decisions.

It lets you choose them.

Kimiko’s breathing is shallow.

“I don’t want to disappear,” she says quietly. “But I don’t want to be… this.”

Eli looks at the prompt.

Then at her.

“We’re not letting it decide what you’re worth,” he says.

He reaches out.

Touches the air where the Y floats.

The moment his finger passes through—

The hallway locks.

Not hostile.

Ceremonial.

Lines of light snap into place like a contract finalizing.

Maya feels it first.

Her thoughts slow.

Not foggy.

Sorted.

Olivia feels weight pour into her limbs.

Not pain.

Responsibility.

Kimiko gasps.

Something lifts inside her chest—

A tightness she didn’t realize was there.

Her eyes widen.

“I can feel myself again,” she whispers.

Relief floods her face.

Too fast.

Too easy.

Eli’s stomach drops.

Because the system never gives without taking.

The intercom speaks.

Not Ms. Hilderbrand.

Not neutral.

Administrative.

“Rollback confirmed.”
“Loss allocation in progress.”

The light patterns change.

They don’t focus on Kimiko anymore.

They fan outward.

Scanning.

Assessing.

Maya stiffens.

“It’s not charging her,” she says. “It’s… redistributing.”

Olivia clenches her fists.

“Onto who?”

The answer comes immediately.

The lights settle.

On Eli.

The world tilts toward him.

Not gravity.

Attention.

Eli feels something peel away.

Not memory.

Not power.

Something quieter.

More foundational.

His sense of weight.

The subtle awareness that let him know exactly where he stood in relation to others.

He stumbles.

Catches himself.

For the first time—

The floor doesn’t respond.

Kimiko rushes forward instinctively—

Stops.

Horrified.

“Eli,” she whispers. “You’re… loud.”

He looks up at her.

Confused.

“What?”

Maya swallows.

“I can’t feel your center anymore,” she says. “It’s like… you’re everywhere at once.”

The intercom clarifies.

“Loss assigned:
STABILIZING ANCHOR — REMOVED.”

Eli breathes.

In.
Out.

It doesn’t help.

The space around him doesn’t settle.

Gravity behaves inconsistently.

Walls hum uneasily.

The hallway starts to drift.

Olivia moves to support him—

But the floor shifts under her, rejecting the transfer of load.

Kimiko grabs Eli’s arm.

This time, she steadies him.

“I’m here,” she says urgently. “I’ve got you.”

Eli forces a smile.

“That’s new,” he says.

The system pauses.

Conflicted.

Kimiko stabilizing someone else breaks its model.
